Blow Up
Filmed in 1966,
Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow Up utilized swinging London
and one of it's key symbols, the fashion photographer.
Thomas played by David Hemmings wanders through a park
and takes a picture of a happy couple, much to the
disgust of the woman, Jane played by Vanessa Redgrave.
When he goes back to develop the pictures he finds he may
have witnessed a murder. Thomas goes back to the park
later at night and finds the corpse hidden in the bushes.
Persuading Ron played by Peter Bowles to check it out
isn't easy and later he discovers the corpse and the
pictures have both disappeared. Music note : On his travels, Thomas visits a club and checks out The Yardbirds (with Jimmy Page playing rhythm guitar) playing to a motion-less crowd. The Who were short-listed to originally appear in the film and at one point so were Tomorrow who even appear on the recent soundtrack with the songs Blow Up and Am I Glad To See You, in the end Keith West & company appeared as The Snarks in Smashing Time with Rita Tushingham and Lynn Redgrave. Today, Maryon park hasn't changed much. The park is situated on the Woolwich Road (A206), New Charlton, SE7. A short drive down the A206 will take you to the parks entrance, the road has completely changed, you can see construction going on as the film was being made and sadly the antique shop isn't there anymore (shame). In fact the whole area outside looks very different, so different that at first I thought I was in the wrong place. Nothing much has changed once inside the park, the wooden fence has long gone but everything else looks just like it did in 1966. Here is a selection of pictures of Maryon Park as it is today. |
